A graduate of Mariupol State University is the winner of the World Olympiad for Modern Greek

From August 22nd till September 3d 2016, Thessaloniki hosted second and final stage of the World Olympiad for Modern Greek, which was held within the framework of celebrating Aristotle’s anniversary. 14 participants were the finalists. They represented 9 following countries: USA, Australia, Germany, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia and others. Ukraine was represented by the graduate of the Faculty of Greek Philology of Mariupol State University Valentyna Oliinyk and assistant at Classical Philology and Literature Department of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University Anna Vinnyk. They were the winners of the national stage of the Olympiad.

Reminder: the first stage of the competition was held at the premises of Mariupol State University and Ukraine was represented by temporarily assuming the responsibilities of the Head of the Department of Greek Language and Translation of Mariupol State University, Associate Professor Julia Zharikova who also was a member of the organizing committee.

As a part of the final stage of the Olympiad the participants undertook an intensive course of studying modern Greek language at the University camp in Possidi (Chalcidice) and then passed the final tests. The final test has found three winners, including two participants from Ukraine. Anna Vinnyk took the first place and Valentina Oliinyk took the third place. It is a pleasure to note that MSU graduate Valentina Oliinyk demonstrated the high level of Modern Greek language proficiency representing honorably the University, Mariupol, and Ukraine in general. On summarizing the results of the Olympiad, Valentina was awarded a diploma, certificate of participation and a money prize. Mayor of Thessaloniki Yiannis Boutaris, Deputy foreign minister Yannis Amanatidis, the chairman of the Hellenic National Commission for Unesco Catherine Tzitzikosta and other guests delievered a speech to the participants and the members of the organizing committee at the closing of the Olympiad.

In addition, President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos and head of the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece Michalis Kokkinos send their wishes of success in a letter.
