Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Italy to Ukraine Fabrizio Romano became Honorary Professor of MSU

On November 22, 2013 Fabrizio Romano, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Italy to Ukraine and Nicola Franco Balloni, Director of the Institute of Italian Culture, Honorary Professor of Mariupol State University visited MSU. Students in Italian and Ukrainian national costumes greeted the honorary guests with the traditional bread-and-salt welcome.

Fabrizio Romano has visited MSU twice over the past six months. He got acquainted with the University’s structure, its culture centers, academic staff and students of the Department of the Italian language, literature and culture. This time upon arrival he met with Rector of MSU, Professor Kostyantyn Balabanov. They discussed the development of relations with Italy in the field of education, science and culture. During his first visit to the University in June 2013 Ambassador attended a graduation ceremony of the first Bachelor graduates majoring in Italian language and literature.

This time, Fabrizio Romano also paid attention to the younger students; he held a lecture on Crisis situations abroad and experience of Italian diplomacy for the future political scientists, diplomats and linguists. The visit of the Italian delegation to MSU culminated in awarding the title of Honorary Professor of Mariupol State University to Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Italy to Ukraine Fabrizio Romano.

The awarding ceremony took place during the solemn meeting of the University Academic Council, faculty members and students that was also attended by Deputy Mayor of Mariupol Hennadiy Mytrofanov. The decision of the MSU Academic Council was adopted unanimously, which was influenced by Ambassador’s personal contribution to diplomatic relations between Italy and Ukraine, active assistance in the University’s cooperation with Italian institutions and promotion of the Italian language, literature and culture.

Fabrizio Romano became the first Ambassador of a foreign country among the Honorary Professors of Mariupol State University. The University has high hopes for an experienced diplomat, whose professionalism will guarantee further fruitful cooperation aimed at developing ties with the Italian Republic. The solemn meeting ended with a concert of the University’s best soloists and ensembles.
