On September 16-17, 2013 well-known scientists and MSU’s good friends Professor Charalambos Bakirtzis, Director of the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation and Professor Vassos Karageorghis, a permanent member of the Executive Board of the Foundation, paid a visit to Mariupol State University.

On September 17 the staff and the students attended a solemn assembly held in the University Assembly Hall in honor of the guests’ arrival and opened by Rector of Mariupol State University, Doctor of Political Science, Consul Honorary of the Republic of Cyprus to Mariupol Kostyantyn Balabanov.

Rector expressed his gratitude to the guests for their perennial fruitful cooperation with the University and a great contribution to the development of science and education. In accordance with the decision of the University Academic Council he awarded them with the Medal "Honoris Causa".

The guests also watched a bright performance prepared by the best art ensembles of the University.

The world-renowned Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation has been providing comprehensive support to Mariupol State University for many years. In joint effort they implemented many large-scale projects that contributed to improving the quality of training, strengthening the scientific capacity and logistics facilities of the University.

Rector of Mariupol State University held a press-conference dedicated to the visit of the Cypriot partners where he summarized and discussed new areas of cooperation with the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation.




Vassos Karageorghis is a world known scientist, a distinguished Hellenist, a professor of archeology, a permanent member of the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation Executive Board, an Honorary Professor of the leading European Universities including MSU. He works with two of the greatest museums of the world - the Cyprus Museum and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. For his outstanding achievements in science, culture and literature professor Karageorghis was awarded with high state awards of Greece, Cyprus, UK, Germany, USA, Sweden , France, Canada , Bulgaria and other countries.

Charalambos Bakirtzis is a reputable scientist, a Doctor in Byzantine Archaeology, an author of numerous articles and research papers on Byzantine Archaeology, Director of Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation. He is well experienced in excavating and restoring artifacts, Byzantine frescoes and mosaics of Byzantine and early Ottoman periods. Professor Bakirtzis lectured at the leading Universities in Europe and the U.S., conducted archaeological exhibitions worldwide. In 1999-2007 Charalambos Bakirtzis was a member of the General Archaeological Council of the Greek Ministry of Culture.
