English language lesson – special for the Guinness World Records Book

the most attended lesson of English language in the history of Ukraine was held on May 28, 2016. That day, thousands of Ukrainians were studying English interactively in a form of a speaking club.

Mariupol has also supported this initiative. More than 400 students and schoolchildren gathered in the assembly hall of Mariupol State University to beat the existing world record in a category of "The largest language lesson in the world." The lesson was conducted by the Head of the Department of English Philology of Mariupol State University and a highly experienced teacher Nadezhda Nazarenko. At the beginning of the lesson attendants and later on Rector of Mariupol State University, Professor, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Cyprus to Mariupol Kostyantyn Balabanov greeted Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the USA to Ukraine Mr. Geoffrey R. Pyatt, who communicated with people via video conferencing from Lviv.

The largest English language lessons was conducted at St. Sophia Square in Kyiv and at the square near the Lviv Opera on May 28th. This year (which is the year of English language in Ukraine by the way) the lesson brought together people from Mariupol, Odessa, Lviv, Kharkiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Chernivtsi, Kramatorsk, Khmelnytsk, Ternopil and a number of other cities.

People of Ukraine from 55 cities, being at more than 100 sites simultaneously were present at the English language lesson to show that Ukraine is eager to speak the same language with the world. Anyone could attend the lesson regardless of the place of residence and English language proficiency. The project was initiated as a part of the campaign «Україна Speaking» and coordinated by the GoGlobal team and the Embassy of the United States to Ukraine. It was not by chance that MSU was chosen as the venue. US Ambassador to Ukraine Mr. Geoffrey R. Pyatt visited Mariupol State University and met with students in late April. The meeting was held in English. Young people were interested in international internships in the United States and the possibility of internship at the US Embassy to Ukraine. During the visit, the Ambassador noted the high level of students’ proficiency and the results of international activities of the university.

The largest English language lesson was a part of the Days of America program and took placethanks to the support provided by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, the Capital English Program, British Council Ukraine, America House and Window on America.
