MSU joined to the celebration of Ohi Day in Mariupol

On October 26 a solemn event on the occasion of the Ohi Day and 74th anniversary of liberation of Ukraine from fascist invaders was held in Greek cultural center “Meotida”. Mariupol State University, Consulate General of the Republic of Greek in Mariupol, Greek Community Federation and Mariupol Greek Society were the arrangers of this meeting. Professors and students of the Faculty of Greek Philology and Translation took part in the event.

The Ohi Day is celebrated in the countries all over the world, where there is a Greek expatriate community. On October 28 in 1940 Italian dictator Benito Mussolini gave an ultimatum to the Greek government with the requirement to allow the Italian troops to occupy the territory of Greece, on which the Greek people unanimously answered "No" ("OHI") and took up an unequal struggle with the enemy.

 

During the opening of the solemn event Greek and Ukrainian anthem could be heard. The Head of the Greek Community Federation in Ukraine Oleksandra Protsenko-Pichadzhi, the Consul General of Cyprus Republic in Mariupol Eleni Georgupulu and Rector of MSU, the Professor, Honorary Consul General of Cyprus Republic in Mariupol Kostyantyn Balabanov gave a welcoming speech to the audience. They made a point on deep symbolism in the fact that two fraternal people, namely Ukraine and Greece, this day praise the feat of the heroes who made a stand for their motherland during the WWII and those who continue to defend their native land in our time.

 

The audience hold the memory with a moment of silence to the dead during the WWII and those who gave their lives, depending the boards of independent Ukraine.

 

Students of the Faculty of Greek Philology and Translation of MSU namely Victoria Kondratiyeva, Oleksandra Lipska and Anna Povod, pupils of preschool of Mariupol Greek Society and the pupils of Mariupol primary and secondary general schools â„–8, 47, the group of Greek dance of Mariupol Greek Society, folk ensemble "Sartanian Gems" and exemplary male ensemble of Greek dance "Zorba" prepared the artistic acts.

 

At the end of the event, following the tradition, the anthem of the Ukrainian Greeks “Embros” was sung by the laureate of the International festival of Greek songs n.a. Tamara Katsy Tatiana Sagirova.
