MSU teachers adopted the methods of teaching courses on journalism at the University of Sweden

Teachers of Mariupol State University visited Linnaeus University in Kalmar (Sweden) within the frameworks of the project "Journalistic education for democracy in Ukraine: standards development, integrity and professionalism" (DESTIN), which is implemented under the European Union Erasmus+ programme.

With the purpose of studying the European experience of teaching courses on journalism, the Dean of the Faculty of Philology and Mass Communications, Professor Svitlana Bezchotnikova and Associate Professor of the Social Communications Department Olena Melnykova- Kurhanova went to Sweden.


During five days, from 6 to10 October, teachers from Ukrainian and European universities involved in the project were getting acquainted with the methods of work in the classroom, peculiarities of teaching practice-oriented disciplines, creation of bachelor and master projects, and educational programmes of the university: Creative Media Programme, Journalism and Media Production Programme, Media and Entrepreneurship Program.
 

The educational process at Linnaeus University has similar features to training in the Journalism major in MSU, because it consists of 50/50 theoretical and practical disciplines. Journalistic ethics and standards based on fact-checking, analytical research and protection of information sources are characteristic of professional journalism in Sweden. During practical training, new equipment is actively used in educational studios, including for radio and video, computer classes for working on creative projects,

The teachers also visited the Kalmar media. Svitlana Bezchotnikova got acquainted with the production process on the public radio "P4 Kalmar Sveriges Radio", whereas Olena Melnikova-Kurhanova did it at the editorial office of one of the oldest socio-political newspapers of the city "Đ’arometern".


In addition to excursions, the working trip included discussion of topical issues of the DESTIN project. The participants discussed about the journalistic competency of the future specialist important in the process of developing training programs.


Upon completion of the internship, all participants received certificates.
