The team of Mariupol State University and personally Rector, Professor Kostyantyn Balabanov, Honorary Consul General of the Republic of Cyprus in Mariupol express deep condolences owing to the death of Dimitris Christofias, ex-President of the Republic of Cyprus, Honorary Professor of Mariupol State University.

The death of a reputable politician, the prominent statesman of the Republic of Cyprus, who has gained world recognition through his selfless work, wisdom, patriotism and the quest for a peaceful settlement of the Cyprus question has become a huge loss for the international community.

Mr. Dimitris Christofias paid much attention to the comprehensive support of the numerous Greek diaspora in Ukraine and abroad. In 2011 he visited Mariupol and Mariupol State University. For a significant personal contribution to the university's development, the strengthening of a friendship between the Ukrainian and Cypriot peoples, the Academic Council of Mariupol State University unanimously decided to award him the title of Honorary Professor of Mariupol State University.

The MSU team shares the pain of this grave loss with the entire Cypriot people and convey sincere condolences to Mrs. Elsie Christofia Mr. Christofias's wife, his family and friends.
