In September 1991, at the instigation of the Hellenic Association of Mariupol and Donetsk State University and with the assistance provided by the City Hall of Mariupol, Mariupol College of Humanities was founded as an affiliation of Donetsk State University. A few classrooms were given to the new higher educational institution in the House of Political Renaissance. Only 102 students were learning in as few as 5 majors. The academic process was carried out by 12 instructors, only 3 of them having taken their scientific degrees by that time.
In August 1993 Mariupol College of Humanities was reorganized into Mariupol Institute of Humanities (MIH) of Donetsk State University on the basis of the edict issued by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. At that time there were as many as 393 students with 40 instructors teaching them.
The first research conference “Donbass and Priazov’ye: problems of social, national and spiritual development” was held.
Philology Faculty was created.
An agreement on cooperation was signed with Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Hellenic Republic)
On the Institute’s 5th anniversary there were 1126 students learning at 4 departments and in 9 majors. 8 full and 31 associate professors worked on the staffs of 11 faculties. The Institute hosted international research conferences facilitated by prominent scientists and politicians from Ukraine and Greece.
The Institute hosted the research conference “Ukraine – Greece: experience of friendship and cooperation prospects”, which was attended by leading scientists and politicians of Ukraine and Greece.
New faculties were created: History Faculty, Law Faculty and Foreign Languages Faculty.
The new academic building of Foreign Languages Faculty was put into operation.
The Diploma of MIH Honorary Professor was conferred on K. Stefanopoulos, President of Hellenic Republic (1997).
Mariupol Institute of Humanities was recognized in Ukraine and in Greece as the leading center of academic instructions in the Greek language, revival of the Ukrainian Hellenes as well as the center of friendship and cooperation between the two countries. The university was visited by Konstantinos Stefanopoulos, President of Hellenic Republic, who was elected Honorary Professor of MIH.
Agreements on cooperation were also signed with the leading universities of Greece, Bulgaria and Serbia.
A number of agreements on cooperation were signed with such agencies as Greek Chamber of Commerce, Mayor’s Office of the island of Kalimnos, Secretariat General of the Greeks Abroad for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hellenic Republic (the scholarships).
Minister of Education of Ukraine V.Zaichuk (1999) welcomed the participants of the International Research Conference “Ukraine-Greece: historical heritage and cooperation prospects”.
Extramural Education Faculty emerged at MIH.
The new academic building of Philology Faculty was put into operation.
The large-scale research conference Ukraine – Greece: historical heritage and cooperation prospects” was attended by Minister of Education of Ukraine V.Zaichuk, Minister for Education and Religious Affairs of Hellenic Republic G.Arsenis and more than 300 leading scientists, public leaders, state officials and politicians from Ukraine, Russia, Greece and Georgia. The conference promoted the further widening of scientific, educational and cultural cooperation between Ukraine and Greece.
Mariupol State Institute of Humanities is 10 years old. Over that period of time, the University has trained more than 1000 specialists in such fields as linguistics, history, law, international economics and pre-school education.
The new academic building of Economics & Law Department is brought into operation.
Greek Philology Faculty– the first and the only one in Ukraine - was created.

In June Mariupol Institute of Humanities of Donetsk National University acquired the status of a university on the basis of the edict issued by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of June 17th, 2004, № 401-p.
In September Professor Kostyantyn Balabanov, Rector of Mariupol State University of Humanities, signs Magna Charta Universitatum at Bologna University; thus MSUH joins more than a 500-member family of the best European Universities.
Professor S. Nikolaenko, Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, visited Mariupol State University of Humanities. A meeting was held with students and teachers of Mariupol University of Humanities and the Azov State Technical University as well as with the pedagogical community of Mariupol.
For the first time ever, MSUH students did their internship abroad–at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Cyprus.
On June 18th-19th, for the first time in Ukraine, two universities – Donetsk National University and Mariupol State University of Humanities hosted the sessions of Magna Charta Observatory. Leading scientists as well as rectors of famous universities of Ukraine and Europe took part in that session.

Rector of MSUH Kostyantyn Balabanov became member of the Board of Directors of the European Public Law Organization. The University became the premises of the EPLO official representation.
The Library of Hellenistic Studios “Konstantinos Leventis” appeared and became famous both in Ukraine and abroad as the most modern and highly completed library on Hellenism. Anastasios I. Leventis, Director of Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation takes part in the opening ceremony of the Library of Hellenistic Studios at MSUH.
The University becomes the seat of the European Public Law Center in Ukraine. It also becomes the library reference center on public law.
MSUH was elected member of the Presidium of the International Association of Juridical Universities, whose headquarters are located on the Law Faculty of Moscow State Lomonosov University.
Under the active guidance of Rector Balabanov, Ukraine was elected member of the European Public Law Organization.
It was for the first time in Donetsk Region that a university organized a joint session of the Presidium of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine and the Council of Donetsk Region University Rectors. The Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine and MSUH signed an agreement as a result of that session.
The University held a large-scale international research conference “Open dialogue: state, industry and civil society. Sustainable environmental development in Ukraine”.
The student dormitory was put into operation.
The University became the premises of the Center of Information for the European Commission in Ukraine.
By the edict issued by Thasos Papadopoulos, President of Republic of Cyprus and with the assistance provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Consulate Honorary of Republic of Cyprus was set up at MSUH’s premises. Kostyantyn Balabanov, Rector of MSUH, was nominated Consul Honorary of Republic of Cyprus in Mariupol.
A working visit of Rector Balabanov to Greece, at the time of which he had appointments and constructive dialogues with many people and with President of Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias.
The University hosted the international research conference “Hellenic development in Ukraine in the 18th – to the early 21st century”.
The Pre-University Training Center was opened.
Karolos Papoulias, President of Hellenic Republic, was awarded the Diploma of MSUH Honorary Professor and attended the opening ceremony of Ukraine-Greece Friendship and Hellenistic Research Institute.

Mariupol State University of Humanities acquired the status of a higher education institution of the 6th level of accreditation.

Consul Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Republic of Poland Yatsek Klyuchkovskiy visited Mariupol to meet students majoring in international relations, activists of the International Diplomatic Corps League and MSUH administration in the framework of the Euro Week held in Mariupol.
The State Accreditation Committee headed by Professor Ivan Vakarchuk, Minister of Science and Education of Ukraine, decided to confer on Mariupol State University of Humanities its highest award – the fourth level of accreditation.

According to the results of the annual regional contest “Zolotoy Merkuriy”held by Donetsk Chamber of Commerce, Mariupol State University of Humanities won in the nomination “For charity”. The organizers paid a special compliment to MSUH students’ charity project “With warmth in the heart”.
Mariupol State University was visited by Secretary General of the Union “Dante Aligieri”, Doctor Alessandro Mazi and Director of the Italian Institute of Culture in Ukraine, Professor Nikola Franco Balloni. MSUH became the premises of the Representation of “Dante Aligieri” that exercises knowledge certification in the Italian language within the framework of the PLIDA Project.

Mariupol State University of Humanities and Kiev Vadim Get’man National University of Economics and National Prykarpats’kyy Vasyl’ Stefanyk University became the winners of the joint EU – UNO project “Program of joint opportunities and women’s rights in Ukraine”. The event resulted in the memorandum of cooperation between the EU – UNO Program and MSUH and in appearance of the Gender Studies Center.
The opening ceremony of the Israeli Cultural Center was held on Foreign Languages Faculty. The University was visited by the Councilor of the Embassy of the State Israel in Ukraine and the Regional Director of the “Nativ” organization Felix Mindel.
The University took an active part in celebrating the Days of Europe in Ukraine held in Mariupol and Kherson. Mariupol was visited by ambassadors and of diplomatic representatives from 8 EU member states.
The Center of Polish Culture was also created. The Center is supposed to help students learn the Polish language and literature and to adjust student exchange with the Polish universities. The solemn opening ceremony was attended by Consul General of Republic of Poland in Khar’kov Grzegorz Sorochinskiy and First Vice Rector of Polonian Academy in Czestochowa Maria Urbaniec.
MSUH acquired the status of a classical university and was renamed into Mariupol State University (MSU).
Within the framework of the FORMULAS educational project, the university was visited by Jock Mendoza-Wilson, a top manager of the company “System Capital Management”. He held a master class “Public speeches” (in English) for MSU students.

MSU held an unprecedented research conference in its history: “Science and education in the modern university in the context of international cooperation”, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Ukrainian Independence. The scientific forum gathered more than 300 participants from 15 countries of the world. The conference was attended by well-known scientists and diplomats as well as by state officials and public leaders from Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Cyprus, China, the USA, France and other countries. The participants and the guests of the conference were greeted by the presidents of three countries: President of Ukraine, President of Hellenic Republic and President of Republic of Cyprus. In the framework of the conference, seven agreements on cooperation were signed with most authoritative universities of Great Britain, Greece, Italy, China and Russia.

On July 5th, a highly respected guest arrived in Mariupol in response to the invitation made by Professor Kostyantyn Balabanov, Rector of MSU. That was Dimitris Christofias, President of Republic of Cyprus. At the solemn session of the Scientific Board, the instructors and the students of Mariupol State University, Mr. President was awarded the title of MSU Honorary Professor and a medal in acknowledgement of his contribution to the University’s development. That visit promoted the strengthening of cooperation and the expansion of educational, scientific and cultural cooperation between the University and Republic of Cyprus.

On October 23, Mariupol State University hosted a meeting of the University Rectors Council of Donetsk Region. The key item on the agenda of the meeting was MSU sharing experience in the field of international cooperation. The issue of cooperation among the Regional Council and Universities in the region was discussed there as well.
Mariupol State University hosted a visiting session of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy devoted to problems of globalization in context of Christian culture. It was attended by Assemble members form Russia, Greece, Poland, including members of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Donetsk Regional Council, Mariupol City Council, heads of local businesses and universities, members of the clergy. The participants of the authoritative meeting discussed the development of Christian culture in the globalizing world.
MSU confirmed its 4th level of accreditation in the status of a classical university.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Italy to Ukraine Fabrizio Romano visited MSU. During the visit, the Ambassador outlined the prospects of cooperation with the University and participated in the graduation ceremony of the first Bachelors majoring in Italian Language and Literature.
Mariupol State University was awarded the Order of Holy Prince Yaroslav the Wise of Kiev for services to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and on the occasion of the 1025th anniversary of the Christianization of Kievan Rus. During the solemn ceremony the Holy Archimandrite of the Holy Dormition Sviatohirska Lavra, Metropolitan Ilarion of Donetsk and Mariupol awarded the Order to Rector of MSU, Professor Kostyantyn Balabanov.
MSU made the top hundred list of the best universities of Ukraine of the ІІІ, IV levels of accreditation according to the “TOP-200 Ukraine” rating, which is comprised by the group of international experts in collaboration with the European Center for Higher Education UNESCO-CEPES and the Centre of International Projects "Euroeducation".
In April, the University was attended by the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Professor Serhiy Kvit, who got acquainted with MSU activities and held meetings with academic staff and students of MSU.
In June MSU had an opportunity to cordially greet the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. The President met with instructiors, staff and students of the university.
In his speech, Petro Poroshenko stressed that today's students have every chance to live in a prosperous European Ukraine and wished all the only important thing today, which is peace. After meeting with the university president said: "It is the place where everybody has been working for a long time at improving the image of Mariupol and Ukraine abroad, actively supporting the European integration aspirations of the Ukrainian state."
