Polish Consul General to Donetsk Jakub Wołąsiewicz paid a visit to MSU
On June 13 Mariupol State University gave a hospitable bread-and-salt welcome to Consul General of the Republic Poland to Donetsk Jakub Wołąsiewicz who attended the University for the first time.

The visit agenda was traditionally rather intense. On the University tour the guests visited the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Cyprus to Mariupol, the Representation of the European Public Law Organization, the Center for Gender Studies and Education, the Konstantinos Leventis Library, the Institute of Ukraine-Greece Friendship and Hellenistic Studies, and the Italian Culture Center. Afterwards they held talks with Rector of Mariupol State University, Professor, Consul Honorary of the Republic of Cyprus to Mariupol Kostyantyn Balabanov. In the course of the talks they discussed the main fields and prospects of cooperation between MSU and Consulate General of Poland to Donetsk. Jacub Wołąsiewicz also got acquainted with the Polish Culture Center, which became an important point on his visit agenda to MSU.

The Center was established in 2010 at premises of the Philology Faculty. Its work is aimed at promoting Polish literature, language, history and traditions among students and local community. Effective collaboration with Polish partners (including Embassy of Poland to Ukraine, Consulate General of Poland to Kharkiv, Polish universities and foundations) enables the staff to update the library stock and the equipment of the Center.

The Center’s activities were presented by Head of the Russian Philology and Translation Department Olena Pedchenko and Polish lecturer Żaneta Pawłowicz. The Consul also communicated with students. Today, about 200 students of the Philology Faculty of MSU study Polish. They are majoring in "Translation (Ukrainian, Russian, and Polish)", "Language and Literature (Russian)", and "Ukrainian language and literature."

MSU is actively developing cooperation with universities, organizations and institutions in Poland. In 2011 MSU signed a cooperation agreement with the University of Silesia in Katowice, which enables MSU students to participate in Polish language courses. In 2012 the administration of Polonia Academy in Częstochowa established special scholarships for two MSU students (Mykhailo Moroz and Daria Batychko) giving them the opportunity to get enrolled in Master's Program in Financial Management (in September 2012 the students started their studies in Poland).

In total, 118 MSU students and faculty members participated in educational and cultural internships in Poland over the past 5 years (language courses at the University of Silesia and at the Center of Polish Language and Culture for Poles and foreigners of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University; educational and cultural program “Study Tours to Poland”; various conferences and seminars). Jakub Wołąsiewicz was invited to MSU by Rector, Professor Kostyantyn Balabanov. This visit evidences the University’s international recognition and the interest of foreign partners in establishing and developing partner relations with MSU being a leading educational, scientific and cultural center which has earned high reputation both in Ukraine and abroad.
