Results of 13th All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in Modern Greek at Mariupol State University
The results of the 13th All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in Modern Greek were summarized on April 25 at the Faculty of Greek Philology of Mariupol State University.

Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has been appointing Mariupol State University to hold this competition for 13 years in a row, which confirms the University’s leading position in the field of Hellenistic studies in Ukraine and its international mission of the leading center of Greek education abroad.

The competition was attended by 17 students from the following leading universities of Ukraine: Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Kyiv National Linguistic University, Kyiv Slavonic University, Odessa I.I. Mechnikov National University, Institute of Social Sciences of Odessa I.I. Mechnikov National University, Taurida National V.I. Vernadsky University, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, and Mariupol State University.

The organizing committee of the Olympiad was traditionally headed by Corresponding member of the National academy of pedagogical sciences of Ukraine, Consul Honorary of the Republic of Cyprus to Mariupol, Professor Kostyantyn Balabanov.

The jury was comprised of prominent Ukrainian scientists, experts in Hellenistic Studies: Associate Professor of the Department of Hellenistic Studies of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv Svitlana Perepliotchykova, Ph.D. of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics and Modern Greek Philology of Kyiv National Linguistic University Tetiana Liubchenko, Associate Professor of the Department of Slavic Philology of Kyiv Slavonic University Tetiana Konovalova.

It is noteworthy that 124 student competitions in various fields are held annually in Ukraine. However, the Olympiad in Modern Greek is the only one that is organized with financial support of international organizations. This support is provided by the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation (Cyprus) which has actively and comprehensively fostered the development of Greek language and culture in Ukraine for many years. The Foundation has been providing monetary prizes for the winners of the All-Ukrainian Olympiad in Modern Greek since 2009.

On the eve of the Olympiad the participants received congratulations from Director of the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation, Professor Charalambos Bakirtzis and Professor Vassos Karageorghis that were read out at the opening and closing ceremonies.

Vice-Rector for Research of Mariupol State University, Professor Olena Bulatova, who attended the awarding ceremony, noted that students today have high level of knowledge and great interest in studying Modern Greek, as well as Greek history and culture. She wished successful studies and careers to all the participants.

The awarding ceremony was also attended by Chairman of Mariupol Society of Greeks Nadia Chapni, Dean of the Faculty of Greek Philology of MSU Svitlana Shepitko, as well as by the jury of the Olympiad.

All the participants were awarded diplomas and prizes from Mariupol State University, Federation of Greek Societies of Ukraine, and Mariupol Society of Greeks. The winners, similarly to previous years, received special prizes from the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation: the first prize of 590 EUR, the second prize of 490 EUR, and the third prize of 200 EUR.

The 1st place in the competition was awarded to MSU student, head of MSU Student Council Viktoria Kravchenko; the 2nd place was awarded to the student from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv Yana Vasylevska; the 3rd place was given to MSU student Hrystyna Gaitan. The competition also included the annual essay contest that was held among the students of the Faculty of Greek Philology of Mariupol State University. They had to write essays in Modern Greek on the following topic: Modern Hellenism in times of economic and political crisis. The winner of the contest Olena Tokina received a special prize of 150 EUR from Professor Vassos Karageorghis.

The participants of the Olympiad were warmly welcomed at MSU. They were provided with comfortable accommodation at the University hostel, as well as with cultural entertainment, i.e., on April 24 the guests attended the Greek Cultural Center "Meotida". There they got acquainted with creative university life of MSU students by watching a concert "FGP Channel” prepared by the Student Council of the Faculty of Greek Philology.
